After that, Koba often came and sat with Marta. She wandered round the room as Marta spoke, looking at things, touching them as she became bolder – the springy mattress she longed to bounce on, the bed linen whose fineness she liked to feel. Marta’s tortoiseshell hairbrush amused her, but most marvellous of all was the mirror on the dressing table. She stared in it for hours, pulling faces, checking views of herself to left and right in the wing mirrors.

Marta didn’t mind talking to the back of Koba’s head. There was freedom in being heard by someone who didn’t understand and who wasn’t sufficiently interested to try to. So, she relaxed, made Koba privy to her most contradictory, illogical and even ungenerous thoughts. Slowly, mad grief ebbed away. She became less self-absorbed, began to ask questions Koba could understand: about veld food and weather and animals. A stilted dialogue began.

Later, when Marta was well enough to receive Koba in the kitchen, the girl’s greatest delight was turning the tap on and off. Yau, to have the power to summon water with the twist of a wrist, she thought. She shoved her whole head under the gushing stream, slurping ecstatically at the cool, emerging with a tiara of liquid diamonds.

Tentatively, Marta touched Koba’s hair, delighted by its springiness. Koba was laughing and Marta felt herself turn warm with pleasure.
